Heat and UV are doing the most damage to your vehicle, and neither one leaves a mark you notice on day one. Clear coat oxidizes slowly. A dashboard cracks after a few summers, not a few weeks. Hard water spots etch in over a single afternoon. By the time any of it is visible, the damage is already in the material rather than on top of it. Almost everything on this page is far cheaper to prevent than to fix.
Sugar Land and Fort Bend County run roughly a hundred days a year above ninety degrees, on hard municipal water, with lawn sprinklers going all summer. That combination is the local version of this problem, and it is why protection matters more here than it does in a milder climate.
UV breaks down the top of your clear coat. It goes hazy first, then chalky. Red and black paint shows it earliest because those pigments absorb the most energy.

A proper interior protectant blocks UV and keeps plastics flexible. The greasy high-gloss stuff is a different product, it attracts dust, and it does very little for the material underneath.
Heat pulls moisture out of leather. Conditioner puts it back, and it only works while the surface is still intact. Once it has cracked, you are managing it rather than fixing it.
The cheapest interior protection available anywhere. Ten dollars of folded cardboard against a cracked dashboard is not a close call.

Water dries faster than you can dry it, and you end up spotting the vehicle with the exact activity meant to clean it. Early morning, evening, or in shade.

Caught the same day, a detail spray takes them right off. Baked in for weeks, they are etched into the clear coat and need machine polishing.

Nothing in this chart stops a rock chip or a door ding, and any shop that tells you otherwise is selling you something. Horizontal panels like the roof and hood fail first because they take the most direct exposure. It happens slowly enough that most people do not notice until the damage is already in the clear coat.
The cheapest fix is moving where you park so the lawn system stops hitting the vehicle, which solves it entirely and costs nothing. If that is not possible, rinse and dry the vehicle before the spots bake in the sun. Fresh mineral deposits wipe off easily. Once they have etched into the clear coat they need machine polishing to remove.
Any time works, but going into spring means the coating is in place before love bug season, peak pollen, and the worst of the summer UV, which is when it does the most work. The one real requirement is the cure window: the vehicle needs 24 hours somewhere covered and dry, so a stretch of settled weather makes scheduling simpler.
